On Saturday next, the 27th of September, their is an U10 hurling tournament taking place in the Sports field. This tournament has been organised by the the Juvenile club and this is the second day of the tournament with the preliminary round having already taken place on Saturday the 13th. There are 16 clubs participating, including Lismore, Douglas, Effin, Newcastlewest, Eire Og, Ballygarvan as well as some of our near neighbours. Our own U10 boys performed very well in their preliminary matches, winning them all, and are expected to be in the running for the overall title.
The tournament itself went ahead last Saturday and was a great success. In the mid afternoon a number of teams competed in the shield competition with the winners Newcastlewest beating Eire Óg in this final.
In the afternoon the stronger teams in the competition took to the field of play competing for the cup. Our own boys were one of the first into action taking on Mallow and they were to come out on top in this one. Then Ballygarvan took on Mallow and ballygarvan beat them comprehensively which set up a clash between Banteer and Ballygarvan with the winner set to qualify for the final. However Banteer went into this match without one of their foremost players, Donal, yet they competed gamely and ran Ballygarvan very close. In fact it was Ballygarvan that went on to win the competition out right and thus went home with the cup.
The club would like to thank John O Donoghue for all the time and effort that went into the organizing of this competition as well as all the parents and coaches that helped out over the two days.
As well as this our underage teams are still the hunt for a number of titles. The U12 Hurlers won their league last Wednesday night with a victory over Glanworth with the same group in the semi final of their football league. The U13 Hurlers defeated a much fancied Fermoy outfit in a league semi final last Thursday night on a score line of 7:5 to 1:2. The U 14 Hurlers are competing in their league semifinal next weekend against St. Marks and the U16 Hurlers are awaiting their opposition at county level. We wish all the players and their coaches success in all these matches.
