U14 Hurlers defeated but a lot achieved.

The old saying goes that a week is a long time in politics and the same can be said of sporting life. When the U14 Hurlers qualified for their Final there was a great buzz around the club. All roads led to Ballyhea Last Thursday night for the final against a Ballygiblin side that were the more fancied for the win, yet Banteer had in the back of their minds a league win over the opposition and a gameplan that worked well on that Saturday way back in April.
Banteer were to start the brighter and picked off some fine scores yet an early goal was to rock the confidence of our boys. Despite this they fought back and the play was pretty even from here until half time. Unfortunately Ballygiblin were to come out in the second half with a gameplan that Banteer struggled to cope with and in particular the Ballygiblin star player, Mark Keane, was for me the real difference in the game as he proved to be a formidable sweeper at the back. Banteer competed gamely until the final whistle yet Victory went to a deserving Ballygiblin.
Of course this was to be a deflation for all concerned, be they players, coaches, and parents. However I would like to point out to all what has been achieved with this group this year. They were defeated only once in their league campaign and have already qualified for a semi final slot in this competition and reached a final in the Championship. The same group are also going very well in their football, probably qualifying for another league semi final here, and were only defeated narrowly in the championship by a Boherbue team that went on to win a County final.
Have they won any medals yet then the answer would be no but an awful lot has been achieved this year and all those involved should be very proud of their years effort. This is a young team with only a couple of players on the age and we can expect many more exciting days from this bunch into the future.
Finally a thank you to the parents and the coaching team who organized a very successful gathering back at the Glen theatre after the game which stand as testimony to the great community spirit that exists within the club.
