A great night for the club last night as the U16 Team were crowned Champions of the A division and now move on to represent Rebel Og North in the county competition. The losing team was a strong Charleville who had their own successes over this Banteer team in the past and were probably very optimistic going in to this one but they most certainly were in for a surprise. Initially Banteer got on the score board quickly but it was not long before the opposition got in to their stride and picked off some good scores. Banteer were struggling to cope with the speed and accurate passing of Charleville and despite it being early in the match it appeared Banteer were in for a torrid time on the night. Yet Banteer stuck doggedly to the task and even the blow of letting in a goal was not to diminish their resolve. Some shrewed rearrangement of the team helped to steady the ship and in the second half Banteer came roaring back. Colm Coughlan was now in midfield and for me he was the driving force behind the team. Tadghy Sexton began to pick off some good scores and Conor Murphy held his nerve to take some excellent frees. It really was  all equal going in to the last ten when Banteer were to get a crucial goal to go two up. Charleville were quick to answer the challenge and from here it was hell for leather as both teams fought ferociously for every ball. With one minute to go Banteer were up by one point and despite everything bar the kitchen sink being thrown at them the boys held their nerve to clinch it at the end. The resolve of the team was really summed up in the last couple of minutes when a high ball came in to the square and Luke Philpott, who is still under 14, caught, burst out and cleared it despite major pressure.
While I have mentioned a couple of names above it goes without saying this was a real squad effort and every one of the boys should be proud of what they achieved and we as a club certainly are very proud of them.
Finally a word of congratulations to all the coaching team on what they have achieved, and yet to achieve with the U16 and the minor teams.
