Banteer Disappoint against Newmarket

Banteer and Newmarket played in the latest round of the JAHL in Banteer on Sunday last. Played in dry conditions Banteer were looking to bounce back from defeat to Freemount in the previous round. However it was Newmarket whom started the better leading 3 points to 1 after ten minutes. Good play from Richard O Connor saw his efforts rewarded with a point, Pat Sexton also knocked one over but it was 4 points from play from Denis Roche that kept Banteer in contention at half time. Newmarket led at half time 7 points to 6.

On the resumption it was the visitors who impressed storming into a good lead with a well deserved goal. For the second week in a row Banteer showed poorly at the start of the second half. As the game entered the closing stages Banteer found some rhythm. Two points from David Murphy and one from Brendan Weathers saw Banteer draw level only for Newmarket to go up the other end of the field and find the net. Banteer looked down and out but hard work from Kevin Tarrant saw him burst through the Newmarket defence and bury a shot which looked to have secured the draw.

This was not to be the case as indiscipline on 2 occasions in the remaining minutes saw Newmarket convert and injury time free to take the spoils. A courageous come back from Banteer but improvement is needed if they are to advance to the later stages of the competition. Newmarket 2-11 Banteer 1-13 the final score.
