Banteer/Lyre GAA Street League

posted 12 Jan 2015, 09:20 by BanteerLyre GAA
The football and hurling finals in the Banteer/Lyre GAA Street Leagues were played in Banteer Astro on Sunday last. Lyre took on Gortmore/Mountain Road in the football final after both teams were the top two through the group stages. This game was played at a really high intensity as the men from Lyre prevailed on 10-6 score line. For the first half both teams traded scores, Joe Twomey finishing off in style for Gortmore/Mountain Rd for the pick of the goals in the first half. The score was 3-3 as Ger Moran blew the short whistle. On the resumption the game continued at a very high pace, A Kevin Barry penalty save swung the balance in favor of the Lyre men and and they went on to open a sizable lead which would see them secure victory. John McSweeney accepted the cup on behalf of his players.
In the hurling decider near neighbors Clonmeen took on The Village. This was a game that went all the way to the final whistle. Clonmeen showed very well and seemed to be edging things over the first half but The Village were efficient with their chances, scores were level at half time. It was in the second half that competition really grew, it was hard hitting, unrelenting and it was score for score. Colm Coughlan made some superb saves to keep The Village in the hunt, Aidan O Donoghue then at the other end matched that, prevented scores for his Clonmeen side as they bid to remain in the game. In the end it was a pair of breakaway goals from Pa O Keeffe and Jamie Sexton that kept the cup in The Village until next winter.
Thanks to all those who took part in the event, which with the help of a few more bodies will be bigger and better next year. Thanks also to Ger Moran for kindly refereeing the final in both codes.
