Ducon Cup Lyre v Castlemagner 19/04/2014

posted 21 Apr 2014, 11:46 by BanteerLyre GAA

In a game that brought the two top teams of the league so far, it was a game that was up for grabs.

Castlemagner got the perfect start with a very early goal coming from David O' Mahony. The Lyre defence struggled to get organised conceding frees within the scoring zone. It got better for Castle when they scored another goal, this time coming from Stephen Tobin. Lyre soon started to fight back with Denis Roche banging a goal. Timmie Murphy, Barry Murphy and Pa Keeffe added another 4 points to the Lyre scoreboard to put the halftime score at Castlemagner 2-03 Lyre 1-04.

Lyre started well in the second half with two early points to level it all up. The second required the stretcher to be brought on three times, twice for Lyre and once for Castlemagner. A few soft frees, converted by Bryan Barry put Castlemagner back in the lead by two. Lyre defence did well to put off Castle attacks while the forwards tried to get back in front. A late attack from Emmett Buckley and Tom Vaughan saw his effort just go over the bar. As the ref blew the whistle it ended Lyre 1-09 Castlemagner 2-07.
