Ducon Cup Lyre V Cullen 23/03/14

posted 23 Mar 2014, 16:00 by BanteerLyre GAA

In a fixture that brought the two finalists of last years Duhallow Championship Final back together again it was a very interesting fixture with Lyre hoping to get back to winning ways and Cullen trying to get some revenge.

Cullen started well and put on some early pressure but struggled to get the ball on target. Lyre struggled to get into the game with poor decisions and dodgy passing and Cullen took advantage of this but still couldn't make a real mark on the score. David Murphy won a ball by the corner flag and kicked a lovely ball into the square for someone to pick up which Denis Roche gladly took and knocked into the goal. At the end of the first half Lyre lead by 1-05 to 0-03.

Lyre were lucky to be winning going into the first half so they had to prove that they were winning for a reason and Cullen had to get a result to get some points on the league table. The game was very close and intense but Lyre started to get their noses in front and Denis Roche got a fist to a ball that was sent into the square to add the second goal. Cullen really struggled to hit the target, as Aaron Nolan was a key target man for Cullen, the Lyre backs soon started to read the Cullen passes and intercept them. Cullen pressed on as Timmie Murphy was harshly sent off but couldn't change the result, as they could only score one point in the second half. In the end Lyre won handy enough with a score line of Lyre 2-08 Cullen 0-04.
