Banteer blow Kilbrin away with ruthless first half to win JAHL title

DUHALLOW JUNIOR A HURLING LEAGUE FINAL REPLAY

Banteer 6-9 Kilbrin 1-11

ALL too easy for Banteer on cruising to a comprehensive victory over Kilbrin in the Kanturk Credit Union Duhallow Junior A

Hurling League Final replay in Mallow last Friday.

Inspired by a scoring exhibition from corner forward Denis Roche, Banteer responded magnificently to the second chance and no one could argue that the winners deserved this triumph. In doing so, Banteer also put behind the disappointment of a championship defeat after a replay to Kilbrin earlier in the summer.

Roche delivered a stunning 4-2 tour de force in the opening 15 minutes to lay the groundwork for an emphatic win. Kilbrin entered the fray after a three game run in the county championship that ended in bitter disappointment on a semi final loss to Charleville.

And on this occasion, a deflated Kilbrin never succeeded on breaking down the stamina and controlled hurling from Banteer. Indeed Kilbrin seldom threatened to create an impact and in truth the writing was on the wall from an early stage.pening 15 minutes to lay the groundwork for an emphatic win. Kilbrin entered the fray after a three game run in the county championship that ended in bitter disappointment on a semi final loss to Charleville.

Backed by the fresh breeze, Banteer began on a promisingly note, Roche pointing on double.

Indeed, Banteer maintained the early gains, Roche punishing a hesitant Kilbrin defence on two quickfire goals. Far from a one man show, Banteer ruled with a firm hand, Richard O'Connor, Denis Mannix and Dan Dennehy forming a commanding half back line with Brendan Withers and Damien Kearney impressing in the centre.

Upfront, there was no stopping a rampant Roche, availing of direct ball from Withers and Kearney to add further goals. Matters worsened for Kilbrin on a red card picked up by Kieran Sheahan.

Trailng 4-5 to 0-0, Kilbrin waited to the 20th min to open their account from a Liam Daly pointed free followed by another from Patrick Egan. Still Banteer held control and back to back points to Withers gathered a rewarding 4-7 to 0-3 interval advantage.

And the mountain became ever steeper for Kilbrin upon the resumption, David McAulliffe pouncing to net for Banteer. To their credit, Kilbrin shuffled their side around to bring about an improvement under the guidance of Micheál O'Riordan, William Egan and substitute Eoin Sheahan.

Five points on the run confirmed a shift in dominance yet it evaporated on a sixth Banteer goal to Martin Kearney.

Banteer team captain Martin Kearney accepted the league trophy from Richard Murphty, Chairman to the Duhallow Junior Board. And no surprises on the man of the match, Denis Roche, the recipient of his award from Michael Walsh representing Kanturk Credit Union. A disappointing Kilbrin did raise a late green flag to Egan yet it served to put a respectable look on the scoreboard.
