Lyre Battle to Overcome Cullen

posted 11 Aug 2015, 04:41 by BanteerLyre GAA

A game that had excitement written all over it and with a spot in the final up for grabs it was one not to miss. Cullen started the scoring first with a point in the first minute and followed it with a second 2 minutes later as Cullen made their intentions clear. Lyre answered back with two points coming from Pa Keeffe and David Murphy. Points were had to convert due to the tight marking on both sides. Cullen converted once more in the 10th minute with Lyre firing back within the minute. Disaster struck for Lyre as Denis Mannix and Brendan Weathers simultaneously got injured and had to go off, but that's when Lyre stepped up and gave them even more motivation to drive on. Barry Murphy came on and did exactly that scoring two well worked points.

As the referee blew for half time Lyre went in the happier team with a two point lead.

Lyre 0-07; Cullen 0-05

Cullen were once again first off the mark with the first point in the second half. Timmie Murphy brought it back to a two point lead for Lyre in the 42nd minute. Cullen were denied a goal by Kevin Roche with a great save that kept Lyre in control but within the space of 5 minutes Cullen were back level with two quick points. Paudie Ryan put Lyre back in the driving seat in the 54th minute. Kevin Roche made another great save to keep Lyre in front and in the 55th minute Denis Roche slotted over Lyres last point of the game. Cullen had a few wides near the end which could have won them the game, they scored in injury time to make it a one point game but Lyre did enough to see them out and now they will face Knocknagree in the 2015 Duhallow Football final.
