Lyre get the 2 points in dramatic win

Lyre enjoyed a deserved one point victory over hosts Cullen earlier today. Played on very poor underfoot conditions the hosts had a strong wind advantage in that first half & held a 1-5 to 0-1 lead inside the opening quarter, that goal scored off a point blank effort from Aaron Nolan, after a long ball from Colin Moynihan was fielded by Nolan, with more than a hint of the Seamus Darby in the full forwards gathering of the pass on 10 mins. The Cullen points coming from Alan O' Regan, Jerry O' Connor (3) & Brian Kelleher, the latter hitting a superb long range effort. The visitors had a Brian O' Driscoll pointed free as their lone score in that time.
The next quarter saw Lyre get the break their play deserved, with a Denis Roche goal bound effort deflected into the net off Cullen full back James O' Sullivan, leaving goal keeper Billy O' Connor flat footed on the line with 16 mins. minutes elapsed. Jerry O' Connor added a sixth for the hosts on the stroke of half time, to see Cullen ahead 1-6 to 1-1 at the short whistle. The men in black & white will have been disappointed with some careless passing directly assisting Cullen in three of their opening half six points. However the backs did withstand countless attacks time & time again in that half & can feel very satisfied with their defensive effort overall.
The 2nd half saw Lyre on the front foot, enjoying the assistance of a stiff breeze. Denis Roche (2) & David Murphy saw the visitors narrow the margin. While Moynihan & O' Connor had Cullen points with a Murphy effort for Lyre sandwiched in between. Murphy again & a well taken Brendan Withers effort narrowed the margin between the sides to the minimum. Sustained Lyre attacks failed to yield a score, but eventually the constant offensive pressure paid off & Padraig Ryan kicked an excellent point from out in the left wing to bring Lyre level. Then at the end of normal time Brian O' Driscoll pointed through a forest of bodies putting the away side in front for the first time with over 60 mins played. The visitors held onto their slender lead in the closing stages winning at the end 1-9 to 1-8.
Everyone of the Lyre lads can be very satisfied with their efforts, but especially prominent were Withers, Brian O' Keeffe, Denis & Stephen Mannix, David Murphy & Roche.
Best for the hosts were Darragh Twomey, Pat O' Sullivan, Mike Fleming, David Walsh & Jerry O' Connor.
