Lyre Get The Win in Championship Opener

posted 17 May 2015, 09:01 by BanteerLyre GAA

It was that time of the year again. Championship had arrived and Lyre wanted to put down a marker and show Kilbrin they meant business.

Kilbrin came out with all guns blazing winning two frees in the first 5 minutes. Lyre looked a bit lost in the first few minutes, letting Kilbrin through the centre with ease. David Murphy hit Lyre's first score which settled Lyre. Kilbrin were able to open Lyre up again to score their third point. Lyre finally snapped out of it and went on a scoring spree, scoring 1-06 to no reply. Points coming from Damien and Martin Kearney, Timmie and David Murphy and Brian O'Driscoll with 1-01. Lyre were hardworking in midfield which played a big role in most of their scores. It wasn't till the 27th minute that Kilbrin got their next score, they followed that up with a free on the stroke of half-time.

Halftime: Lyre 1-07; Kilbrin 0-05

Kilbrin were first to strike in the second half with a point in the 37th minute. Brian O'Driscoll was accurate with his frees scoring another in the 40th minute. Lyre were very effective in Defense not giving Kilbrin a sniff. Substitute Patrick O'Keeffe was able to put his name on score sheet with a point in the 47th minute. Kilbrin seemed to ease of the gas near the end of the game and Lyre just seemed to hold out and wait for the final whistle. Lyre opened up Kilbrin and Jack Roche was able to convert 53 minutes in. Brian O'Driscoll added one last point for Lyre with a free in the 57th minute. The game was well over but Kilbrin were able to scrap one more point from Lyre. Lyre comfortable winners in this first round championship game.
