First game of the year for both Lyre and Castlemagner and both teams wanted a winning start and see what each will bring to the table. Lyre had the perfect start from a well worked goal finished by Kevin Tarrant and a point from Stephen Mannix. In the 8th minute Lyre won a penalty and Brian O'Driscoll smashed it off the crossbar but ran in to tap it in and Lyre were up 2-1 to no score. A minute later Tim Murphy put over a free. It took 15 minutes for Castlemagner to score which came from a free and within 3 minutes they had put over 3 frees. By the time half-time came both teams just put over one point each.

Halftime: Lyre 2-03; Castlemagner 0-04

Castle were fast off the mark in the second half registering 3 points with Lyre yet to reply. Another free was converted by Tim Murphy. Lyre seemed to take the foot off the gas with Castle adding another 4 points, 3 of them from play. Castle were up one at this stage with Lyre desperately trying to score. It came from Martin Kearney in the 52nd minute, but Castle were confident and with Lyre struggling they took advantage and added on 2 more points. Castlemagner have beaten Lyre in the league 2 years in a row and Lyre have to come from this performance in future games.

Final score: Lyre 2-05; Castlemagner 0-13
